What is Doppler Effect?

Doppler Effect is defined as the change in frequency or wavelength of waves with respect to the observer who is in motion relative to the wave source. For Example you are on a sideway and an ambulance is arriving towards you and it passes you. The amount of sound you hear after the ambulance left decreases and this is beacuse the frequency decreases.

Doppler Effect Formula or Doppler Shift Equation

Doppler Shift is given by the expression f = f₀(v + vr)/(v + vs)

  • Where f is the observed frequency of wave and is expressed in units Hz
  • f₀ is the frequency of emitted wave and its units are also Hz
  • v is the velocity of waves in the medium and default value is 343.2 m/s i.e. speed of sound propagating in air
  • vr is the velocity of the receiver and its value is positive if the receiver moves towards the source
  • vs is the source velocity and its value is positive if the source moves away from the observer.

Example

Calculate the Observer Frequency if the emitted frequency is 15 Hz, Receiver Velocity is 10 m/s, Source Velocity is 8 m/s, wave velocity is 343.2 m/s?

Solution:

Given that

Emitted Frequency f₀ = 15 Hz

Wave Velocity v = 343.2 m/s

Receiver Velocity vr = 10 m/s

Source Velocity vs = 8 m/s

We know formula for Doppler Effect is f = f₀(v + vr)/(v + vs)

Substituting the input values in the above formula we can find the observer frequency f

f = 15(343.2+10)/(343.2+8)

Simplifying further we will get the observed frequency f = 15.08542 Hz

Therefore, the observed frequency f for given inputs is 15.08542 Hz
